What the Hell is Suck Free Poetry? Minimize

Simply put it's accessible poetry.

It's poetry that does not take itself too seriously.

It's poetry that attempts to fill the imagination with visions and concepts that do not take a doctorate degree to pretend to understand.

It's poetry that looks to communicate rather than illustrate how brilliant the author pretends to be.

Oh, and it's poetry that does not suck.

Poetry used to be the play place of all peoples.  Only in the Western world has poetry become segmented into pop-culture song and children's verse and what is perceived as elitist drivel.  For my part, I enjoy poetry that tells a story, that has a structure that walks me through the story, and that does not depend on me understanding some obscure reference or pretension to derive meaning.

Think of the poetry of Alexander Pope or Shakespeare or Byron.  These folks used real words to convey real stories and emotions.  Some time ago it became popular to "break the rules" in poetry along with other areas.  Unfortunately much of this "rule-breaking" was done without any understanding of the reason for the rules.

Take impressionism.  The people behind impressionism understood and could compete in classical painting.  they just chose to extend the medium.  Now take modern art where you are looked down upon if you do not distill the "correct" meaning of a piece.  Modern art is, many times, pretentious, forgetting art is communication and that a failure of communication is the fault of the artist, not the patron.

Suck Free Poetry, at its core, communicates.  You may not like the message, but it's clear and constructed in such a way that is, at the very least, not horrible to read.
